Bolstering the American Economy

President-Elect Barack Obama’s recent visit to the Cardinal Fastener factory in Bedford Heights, Ohio foretells of what is to come in the new green economy. Cardinal Fasteners is one of the nation’s leading producers of industrial fasteners whose products have been used in both the Statue of Liberty and the Golden Gate Bridge. The company also produces components for wind turbines that will be a major source of renewable energy under Obama’s Recovery and Reinvestment Plan.

After a tour of the factory, the president-elect spoke on his Recovery and Reinvestment Plan that is aimed at getting America back on its feet. It seemed only fitting that he do so in a factory in Middle America that will help to revive the nation’s struggling economy. At one point in his speech, Obama had the following to say about renewable energy and its role in America’s future:

“…that’s why as a part of our recovery and reinvestment plan, we are committing to doubling the production of renewable energy in the next three years and modernize seventy-five percent of federal buildings and improve the energy efficiency of two million American homes. That will put people to work, it will save us on our energy bills, it will free ourselves from dependence on foreign oil. In the process we’ll put nearly half a million people to work building wind turbines and solar panels and constructing fuel efficient cars and buildings...Here at Cardinal Fastener that could mean going from operating at fifty-percent capacity to ninety-percent capacity and creating even more good, made-in-America jobs right here in Ohio.”

The president-elect overtly stressed the importance of wind power in America’s near future in front of Cardinal Fastener workers and management, as well as representatives of some of the country’s top wind power companies.
